Understanding Anaesthesia: Keeping You Comfortable During Procedures

Anaesthesia is used to make you comfortable and pain-free during medical procedures, including surgery. It works by temporarily blocking sensations in your body. Anaesthesiologists, who are specialist doctors, and nurse anaesthetists are trained to administer these medications safely.

Types of Anaesthesia:
General Anaesthesia: This makes you completely unconscious, so you won’t feel or remember anything during the procedure.
Regional Anaesthesia: This numbs a specific part of your body, like an arm or leg, while you remain awake or sedated.
Local Anaesthesia: This numbs a small area, like where you might get a stitch. Lidocaine is a common example.

Anaesthesia blocks the nerve signals that carry pain and other sensations to your brain. This allows procedures to be performed without causing you discomfort. The type of anaesthesia chosen depends on the procedure, your health, and other factors like age and allergies.

Anaesthesia is generally safe, but like any medication, it can have side effects. These are usually mild and temporary, such as nausea, vomiting, a headache, or a sore throat. In rare cases, more serious complications like allergic reactions or breathing problems can occur.

At Parkside Private Suite, Heatherwood Hospital, your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Before any procedure requiring anaesthesia, you will have the opportunity to discuss your medical history and any concerns with your anaesthesiologist or surgeon. They will explain the anaesthesia process and answer your questions. Please don’t hesitate to ask anything that’s on your mind.
