Breast Surgery

Breast surgery is a medical procedure that involves the removal or alteration of breast tissue.

There are several different types of breast surgery, including:

  1. Mastectomy: removal of all or part of a breast to treat or prevent breast cancer.
  2. Lumpectomy: removal of a small part of the breast to treat breast cancer.
  3. Breast reconstruction: a procedure to rebuild the shape of the breast after a mastectomy.
  4. Breast reduction: a procedure to remove excess breast tissue to reduce pain and improve the shape of the breast.
  5. Breast augmentation: a procedure to increase the size and enhance the shape of the breasts using implants.

Breast surgery procedures can be performed using general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. The type of anaesthesia used, as well as the surgical technique, will depend on the individual patient’s needs and the extent of the procedure.

After breast surgery, patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising. It is important for patients to follow their surgeon’s postoperative instructions to minimise these symptoms and promote healing. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks, although the exact recovery time will depend on the extent of the procedure and the individual patient’s health.

Breast surgery can have a significant impact on a person’s appearance and self-esteem, and it is important for patients to have a clear understanding of the procedure and its potential risks and benefits before making a decision to undergo surgery.
