Michael Thomas' specialities:

Mr Michael Thomas is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery. He has a special interest in arthroscopy, arthroplasty, shoulder decompression, rotator cuff repair, frozen shoulder, shoulder instability, acromioclavicular arthritis, tennis and golfer’s elbow, ulnar neuritis, radial tunnel syndrome, and fractures of the shoulder and elbow.

He completed his undergraduate training at King’s College Hospital, London. Mr Thomas’ specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics included a year in Cape Town. Mr Thomas was a senior registrar on the St. Mary’s London rotation, where he trained in shoulder surgery under Stephen Copeland and Ian Bayley. Mr Thomas’ first consultant post was in 1994 at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals, Berkshire. Mr Thomas has an interest in research, and he has published articles and book chapters on shoulder and elbow arthroplasty. He has also lectured on shoulder and elbow surgery on a national and international level.

Mr Thomas has co-written several British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) and British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Patient Care Pathways, which he follows in his practice. Mr Thomas was appointed as President of the BESS in 2015 and he is past President and Associate Editor of Shoulder and Elbow, the official journal of BESS. Mr Thomas was on the Medical Advisory Committee of the National Joint Registry and he served as the UK delegate to the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow.

Mr Thomas is Specialist Advisor to NICE’s Interventional Procedures Programme.
